Where to Ski in Japan?

Late this December and into early January, my wife and I will be taking our honeymoon in Japan and Thailand. Since we were married on a ski trip to Telluride this past March, it seems only appropriate that we would ski on our honeymoon.
But Japan has over 500 ski areas so it goes without saying: we need pointers. Hokkaido? Fukushima? Nagano? Have you skied in Japan or done your homework? Where should we go and what can we expect?
